On January 30th the Grand Blanc Grid met with public officials from Grand Blanc Township and the Genesee County Road Commission (GCRC). At this meeting the GCRC explained their policy for reconstructing major roadways:  When a major roadway is reconstructed the roads will be designed with 12’ lanes and 3’ shoulders. In most cases roads will be striped with 11’ lanes which will provide between 4’ and 4.5’ of paved shoulder. This standard only applies to roads that are getting completely reconstructed, and not to simple resurfacing projects.  A recent example of a roadway reconstructed under this policy is Baldwin Rd. between South Dort Highway and Ruby St. in Grand Blanc Twp.  This segment of Baldwin Rd. has wider paved shoulders than adjacent segments of Baldwin Rd.  and should be safer for nonmotorized users.   In the next two years Grand Blanc Rd. between Dort Hwy and Fenton Rd. will be reconstructed with these wider shoulders.

Thank you, Monica

Monica has resigned from Friends of the Grand Blanc Grid to Pursue Other Opportunities

Friends of the Grand Blanc Grid announces the resignation of Monica Shapiro as President of Friends of the Grand Blanc Grid.

Shapiro has submitted her resignation from Friends of the Grand Blanc Grid to pursue other opportunities.  Monica remains passionate and dedicated to the concept of the Grand Blanc Grid.  She developed this vision for equitable transportation throughout Grand Blanc in 1998 when her children were young.  She saw Grand Blanc’s efficient transportation system, a “grid” of primary roads, mostly straight and flat, with no street parking and miles of undeveloped right of way, as an ideal layout for cyclists and pedestrians as well as motorists.  In May 2019, she, Joanie Towarnicky and Jeff Rains, formed Friends of the Grand Blanc Grid.  The organization has worked to build community engagement of the Grid and fundraise for its development.

Upon Monica’s resignation the remaining board members are Joanie Towarnicky, President and Secretary; Loren Crandell, Vice President; Demi Thornton, Treasurer; Mari Kay Scott and Jeff Rains.  Friends of the Grand Blanc Grid wishes to express their gratitude for Monica’s vision, passion and contribution toward the Grand Blanc Grid.  We wish her success with her future endeavors.
